“Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe [Manuscript, 2 p., ca. May 1849]. Clearly sensing that “Annabel Lee” would be his last poem, Poe took the unusual step, after finishing it in May 1849, of writing out several copies, of which this signed copy is one, and circulating them among his friends to ensure that the poem would not go unnoticed. Poe read the poem in lectures in Richmond and sold it, along with “The Bells,” to Sartain’s Union Magazine of Literature and Art for publication. However, it was first printed in the New-York Daily Tribune on October 9, 1849, only two days after the poet’s death, rushed into print by Rufus Griswold, who had received a copy for later inclusion in the tenth edition of The Poets and Poetry of America. Although at least four of Poe’s women friends claimed to have inspired “Annabel Lee,” the poet’s real motivation may be a reflection of his continued mourning for his wife, Virginia, who died two years earlier. White Supremacy and its domination of beauty standards suck.  Youth media is the best.

Throughout the video though, I’m troubled by the use of the word “fair” when referring to lighter shades of skin.  I mean, what is “fair” skin?  It seems to presume that dark skin is unjust.  That’s a nuance we have to work on.

This documentary short looks specifically at how ‘shadism’ affects young womyn within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian diasporas. Through the eyes and words of 5 young womyn and 1 little girl - all females of colour - the film takes us into the thoughts and experiences of each. Overall, ‘Shadeism’ explores where shadeism comes from, how it directly affects us as womyn of colour, and ultimately, begins to explore how we can move forward through dialogue and discussion.

I was just discussing this with one of my friends the other day.

GREAT short documentary. It’s amazing how many cultures suffer from colorism and especially while reading twitter a few days ago, some tweet peeps should watch this and stop making hashtags of #teamlightskin/#teamdarkskin. It’s disgusting, we should be celebrating all different kinds of beauty.
